The CIS awards the Second REIS Prize for an article on salary discrimination in organisations Written by Emilio Castilla, the article "Mérito y discriminación dentro de las organizaciones: diferencias en la evaluación y retribución de empleados/as según género y origen étnico" was published in 2010 in issue 129 of the Revista Española de Investigaciones Sociológicas (REIS) A professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Emilio J. Castilla explains in his article how the processes used to set workers' salaries today can generate wage inequality within organisations. Using workforce data from a large private sector organisation, the author identifies and examines the two main stages of a common practice within companies: variable pay for employees using performance bonuses. This research highlights that employees' gender, ethnic origin and nationality all have a direct impact, both in the first phase of performance evaluation and the second stage of setting the salary. The longitudinal analysis shows that structurally equivalent employees (that is, in the same post and work unit with the same supervisor and the same human capital) obtained different salary increases even after having received the same performance evaluation score, simply on the basis of their gender, ethnic origin or nationality. The article concludes with a discussion of the relevance of these results for existing sociological literature on discrimination and wage inequality associated with gender and ethnic origin within contemporary organisations. The aim of the €2,500 prize, which was first awarded in January 2010, is to recognise works of high originality, relevance and methodological quality that have been published in the journal each year, while also encouraging authors to support the dissemination of their research activity in the national and international scientific community and to increase the visibility of their work in the field of social sciences. The panel of judges was composed of members of the REIS Editorial Board chaired by the President of the CIS, Ramón Ramos.

The Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS) presented "Generaciones excluidas: mexicano-estadounidenses, asimilación y raza", by Edward Telles and Vilma Ortiz, on 10 June at the Madrid Book Fair. The presentation, which was attended by the President of the CIS, Ramón Ramos; one of the authors of the work, Edward Telles, and Professor of Sociology, Antonio Izquierdo, highlighted the originality of the work, not only with regard to its methodological approach but also its important conclusions. Edward Telles and Vilma Ortiz, professors of sociology at the universities of Princeton and California, respectively, outline a series of institutional barriers, such as the shortfalls of the education system and persisting discrimination, to explain why the integration of the youngest generations has come to a halt, and they propose a series of measures which could restart this process. A fortuitous finding was the starting point for this innovative analysis, which shows how the economic and educational progress of immigrants of Mexican origin in the United States has come to a halt in the second generation. In his presentation, Antonio Izquierdo, professor of sociology at the University of A Coruña and Director of the Research Team on Sociology of International Migration, underlined the need to reconsider our view of integration and immigration policies in light of the disheartening results of this cross-generational research. "This is a key text in fields such as stratification, ethnicity and comparative policies on the integration of immigrants and their children in Europe and the United States", asserted Izquierdo.

Certified by the FECYT for its editorial and scientific quality Madrid, Thursday, July 7, 2011 - The Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Ministry of Science and Technology, has awarded the Spanish Journal of Sociological Research (REIS) the Excellent Journal Certificate after having successfully passed the quality evaluation process of Spanish scientific journals carried out by said foundation. In consecutive and exclusive phases, multiple indicators of editorial quality were analyzed, such as peer review; the absence of inbreeding of the authors or the openness of the editorial board, as well as the percentage of originality in the published content, among others. Likewise, the evaluation of scientific quality has assessed the objectives, coverage and contribution to the area of knowledge to which the journal belongs, as well as the impact on its field. The journals that have passed this evaluation, such as the REIS , can be integrated into the Spanish Repository of Science and Technology (RECYT), a platform for digital editing and publication of Spanish scientific journals. Currently, REIS is the only Spanish social sciences journal present in the JSTOR scientific journal repository and the second most downloaded in DIALNET, a repository that includes journals from all areas of knowledge.

A CIS book on the image of politicians and their impact on the vote receives the award from the Spanish Association of Political Science AECPA 2011 Award for a CIS publication Madrid, Thursday, July 14, 2011- “Political leaders, public opinion and electoral behavior in Spain” , by Guillem Rico , published by the Center for Sociological Research (CIS) in 2009, has won the Best Book Award, awarded by the Association Spanish Political Science (AECPA). The jury, which in this edition has evaluated the works published in the last two years, has highlighted their originality, innovation, relevance, impact and repercussion. This is the first research work published in Spain where the nature and effects of images of leaders on the political attitudes and voting decisions of Spaniards are systematically and in-depth studied. Guillem Rico , doctor in Political Science from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, demonstrates that the images of leaders have a notable impact on the voting decisions of Spaniards, corroborating a phenomenon already intuited by students of electoral behavior in our country: a A good evaluation of the leader significantly increases the probability of supporting his or her party. This work takes advantage of the availability of the enormous CIS database, which collects the popularity of the candidates over the last 30 years, and includes an analysis of the evolution of the evaluations of the leaders of the PSOE, PP /AP, IU/PCE, UCD and CDS between 1979-2009. The results of this work suggest that citizens generally make sensible and politically reasoned use of considerations about leaders. It also demonstrates that the images of the candidates are intimately and congruently linked to the circumstances of the political debate, the performance of the governments and the proposals for action of the parties. “Political leaders, public opinion and electoral behavior in Spain” shares this award granted ex aequo also to the work Azorín, parliamentary witness. Journalism and politics from 1902 to 1923, by José Ferrándiz Lozano.
