Informative note on the progress of results of the Barometer for September 2018
Informative note on the progress of results of the Barometer for September 2018
  • 27 SEP 2018

Given some doubts and erroneous information that has been spread about the latest CIS barometer, we want to clarify the following: The inclusion of a question on political interest in the monthly CIS barometers has no cost for this institution, since this question is included in the barometers that the CIS has been carrying out every month. Barometers in which, before the arrival of José María Aznar to the Government, this question was usually included. The reasons that motivate the inclusion of this question, as well as other current political questions, are to be able to provide citizens, as well as Parliament and Spanish society in general, with more detailed, regular and immediate information. What should be understood as a contribution of general interest to everyone. The vote projection model that the CIS includes in its latest barometer is perfectly explained on the CIS website, which anyone can consult freely. With this projection, what is called “kitchen” is avoided and that is not always explained or well understood by those who follow the CIS information. In this case, the CIS collects what the surveyed population thinks and says directly, without any distortion or unexplained re-elaboration. As anyone can see directly, the direct vote is collected and what the respondents themselves declare about the party with which they most sympathize is imputed as a possible added vote. Logically, this results in the parties that have more voting intentions and more sympathies appearing above those that have less direct voting intentions and less sympathies. The sample size of the CIS barometer for the month of September and the largest sampling points in which the surveys are currently carried out (292 municipalities in all Spanish provinces) allow the CIS data to be more representative and more reliable. At the same time, progress is also being made to make these accessible to all parties, political groups, media and citizens, with greater speed, transparency and immediacy with respect to the moment in which they have been carried out. Which implies greater effort and dedication from all CIS staff to offer better, more rigorous and faster information. For any questions, the Communication telephone number is 91 580 76 25.

Today I have asked to be immediately suspended from my duties as Secretary of Studies and Programs of the Federal Executive Commission of the PSOE, to fully dedicate myself to my new responsibilities as President of the CIS with professionalism and the most absolute impartiality. Without conditions. I have also presented the resignation to the income and academic activities corresponding to my status as Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the UNED. After knowing in detail the tasks and responsibilities involved in the Presidency of the CIS, and weighing different opinions and criteria, I have understood that at this time I had to dedicate my efforts and primary dedication to trying to carry out this task well, guaranteeing and supporting good work. and the proven professionalism of the excellent technicians and staff of the CIS, who have always been the best guarantee of its impartiality, its scientific rigor and its credibility. In adopting this decision I have especially valued the need to preserve the good image of the CIS and its credibility and institutional reputation. Today I also want to make public my commitment to work at the CIS according to the strictest criteria of professional ethics and scientific rigor, as I have done over many years, and as those who know me well know. know, both in the academic and research world, as well as in social and political spheres. Not in vain have I recognized the maximum number of six-year research periods that is possible for a University Professor, having proven throughout my academic and professional life my vocation and ability to collaborate and work impartially and objectively with people of other orientations and opinions.
