The CIS commemorates Salustiano del Campo, a pioneer of sociology in Spain, in a tribute ceremony.

  • He was the first director of the Institute of Public Opinion (IOP), predecessor of the CIS, between 1963 and 1971.
  • The event, chaired by José Félix Tezanos, was attended by prominent figures from the scientific and academic world of Sociology in Spain and by family members of the recently deceased prestigious sociologist.


This afternoon, the CIS auditorium hosted a moving tribute to one of the pioneers of sociology in our country, Salustiano del Campo Urbano (La Línea de la Concepción, Cádiz, 1931–Madrid, 2024).

In his speech, the President of the CIS, Jose Felix Tezanos, highlighted the extraordinary importance of Salustiano del Campo's role and contributions to the world of Sociology, in several aspects: "as a professor, scholar and teacher who founded the first Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Political Science in Madrid, as an innovator and reformer in the Spanish society of his time, without forgetting his fundamental role as the driving force behind major research projects and surveys on the family and the population, and his qualities as a rigorous researcher."

Jose Félix Tezanos also highlighted that the Department led by the late eminent sociologist "produced many professors and four ministers: Luis González Seara, José María Maravall, Rosa Conde, and Juan Antonio Ortega y Díaz de Ambrona." The CIS President also noted that Salustiano del Campo participated in and held responsibilities in international organizations such as the UN, UNESCO, and the European Coordination and Documentation Centre for Social Sciences in Vienna.

 


"His was an exemplary life," the President of the CIS concluded, "one that left its mark and is a source of public recognition. Above all, he will live on in our memory."

In his speech, Benigno Pendás, president of the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, reviewed some of Salustiano del Campo's sociological studies, highlighting "his wisdom and great heart."

Juan Montabes, president of the Spanish Association of Political Science in Administration (AECPA), highlighted Salustiano del Campo's "contribution of knowledge and the institutionalization of Sociology."

The president of the Spanish Federation of Sociology, Màrius Domínguez, emphasized the honoree's contribution "to the modernization, recognition, and professionalization of sociology, at a time when Spain was experiencing major social and political changes. He helped modernize sociological thought, adapting it to Spanish society."

Miguel Ángel Ruiz de Azúa, Honorary President of the National College of Doctors and Graduates in Political Science and Sociology, gave a detailed account of the academic life of Professor Del Campo,

Esther del Campo, Professor of Political Science and Administration and Dean of the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology at the Complutense University of Madrid, emphasized Professor del Campo's studies on the family and the changes in the social structure, as well as his "conciliatory approach."

Ana del Campo, the journalist and daughter of the honoree, highlighted "the passion and vocation he brought to his work. He was a man willing to help and teach, a role model for all." Finally, Miguel del Campo, also son of Professor Salustiano del Campo, said that sociologists were "the other family" the honoree had.
