The CIS has carried out a survey on democratic habits in Spain and how citizens perceive democracy, our political system and whether they are happy or not with it, among other issues.

89.8% of the people surveyed agree that political parties have the obligation to reach consensus on important issues that affect citizens. Only 7.4% think otherwise.

When asked about some issues that have become news due to the lack of agreements between parties, 87.7% assure that it is “very or quite important” that the PSOE and the PP reach an agreement on the renewal of the General Council of the Power of attorney. 91.4% think the same about the fight against gender violence and 93.3% believe that it is “very or quite important” that they agree on fair taxation.

Crispation and interest in politics

88.9% of those surveyed believe that there is “a lot or a lot” of political tension in our country. Furthermore, 80.8% are “very or quite” concerned that there is this tension, and 87.7% believe that it is “very or quite important” to reduce tension at the moment in Spain.

58.9% of Spaniards say that politics interests them “a lot or quite a lot”, while 37.3% are interested “little or not at all”.

Democracy, the preferred system

For 80.7%, democracy is preferable to any other form of government and 6.8% affirm that in “some circumstances, an authoritarian government is preferable to a democratic system.” It should also be noted that 9.5% “do not care about one government or another.”

69.5% of those surveyed agree that “the democratic system rather favors the equitable distribution of wealth,” but the functioning of democracy is close to passing for Spaniards with a 4.99.

On the other hand, if we ask how it worked 10 years ago, respondents give it a 6.11 grade. And when asked about the future of democracy 10 years from now, Spaniards are optimistic and approve of it with a 5.23.

The study was carried out from December 11 to 15 and has a sample of 6,195 interviews. All the survey data is available to citizens on our website.
