Friday, November 11, 2016 . This year's National Prize for Sociology and Political Science has been awarded to Emilio Lamo de Espinosa. This Award is a recognition of contribution and scientific work in the field of Sociology or Political Science and is awarded for a professional career or a singular work.

Emilio Lamo de Espinosa (Madrid, 1946) is Professor of Sociology at the Complutense University of Madrid, Doctor in Law from the Complutense University and Doctor in Sociology from the University of California-Santa Bárbara. He is an Honoris Causa Doctor from the University of Salamanca (2012).

Appointed Director General of Universities (1982) and later the first Secretary General of the Council of Universities, assuming responsibility for the preparation of the University Reform Law (1983).

Within the framework of the EXPO (1992), he began research on the image of Spain abroad under the label “The Look of the Other”, a task that has continued since then in numerous countries (Italy, Germany, France, England, USA , Japan and others).

Director of the Ortega y Gasset University Institute (1992-2001) and founder and first director of the Elcano Royal Institute (2001-2005). He has also been President of the Spanish Federation of Sociology (2007-2009), of which he is currently an Honorary Member, and a member of the Research Committee of the European University Institute (European University of Florence).

He won the Jovellanos International Essay Prize in 1996 for his book Societies of Culture and Societies of Science (Nobel Editions, 1996), and is editor (along with S. Giner and C. Torres) of the most used Dictionary of Sociology in the Spanish language ( Editorial Alliance, Madrid). His last book, as coordinator, is Europe after Europe (Madrid, 2010). He has published twenty-two books, more than a hundred scientific monographs, and almost 400 press or popular articles.

The winner has been recognized for his contribution to the development of sociological theory and the sociology of knowledge, his analyzes for understanding changes in a globalized world and his important work in the institutionalization of the social sciences.

The jury was made up of the president of the CIS Félix Requena, the professor of sociology at the Complutense University of Madrid Joaquín Arango Vila-Belda, the professor of sociology at the Public University of Navarra Josetxo Beriaín Razquin, the professor of sociology at the University of the Laguna Teresa González de la Fe, the professor of political science at the National University of Distance Education Carmen González Enríquez, the professor of political science and administration at the University of Valencia Pablo Oñate Rubalcaba, and the professor of sociology of the Autonomous University of Madrid Cristóbal Torres Albero.
