José Felix Tezanos Tortajada was born on August 5, 1946 in Santander. Married, he has three children and five grandchildren. He holds a PhD in Political Science and Sociology. He is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the UNED (National University of Madrid). Since January 1974, he has held various teaching positions at the Complutense University of Madrid, the University of Santiago de Compostela, and the UNED (National University of Madrid), where he organized and launched the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology, of which he was the first Dean. He has six recognized teaching periods and six recognized research periods. From 1995 to 2016, he was Director of the Department of Sociology III (Social Trends) at the same university. He is also coordinator of GETS (Study Group on Social Trends).

He has been a driving force behind the Sistema Foundation since its inception (1981), where he currently serves as its President. He has coordinated various research projects and study forums on the future and social inequalities. He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters in Paris. He serves on the Editorial Boards of REIS (Spanish Journal of Sociological Research), RIS (International Journal of Sociology), EMPIRIA (Journal of Social Science Methodology), and Società Mutamento Politica . Italian Journal of Sociology (Florence). He is the founding director and editor of Sistema, a journal of Social Sciences (quarterly), and editor of Temas para el debate (monthly) and Sistema Digital (a weekly online publication).

He is the author or editor of 82 books and more than one hundred and fifty scientific monographs on topics of social structure, inequalities, political sociology, sociology of work and social trends. Professor of Sociology at the UNED (National University of Education), which he founded. Director of the Study Group on Social Trends. Editor of the journals Sistema and Temas para el Debate. He has also directed the Sistema Foundation since its inception. He served as Secretary of Training (1988-1993) and Secretary of Studies and Programs (2017-2018) for the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party).
