María Ángeles Durán, first woman to receive the National Prize for Sociology and Political Science

Madrid, January 25, 2019. On Tuesday, January 29, at 12:00 p.m., at the National Prado Museum, His Majesty the King will present the 2018 National Prize for Sociology and Political Science to the Professor of Sociology, María Ángeles Durán Heras. , in recognition of his career of professional and academic excellence.

 

The event will be attended by the Vice President of the Government and Minister of the Presidency, Carmen Calvo, and the President of the CIS, José Félix Tezanos Tortajada, among other personalities from the political and academic world.

María Ángeles Durán has a PhD in Political Science, a degree in Political and Economic Sciences. She has been Professor of Sociology at the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Zaragoza and head of the Chair at the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the Autonomous University of Madrid. Research Professor at the CSIC. He has directed the Department of Socioeconomic Analysis and belonged to the Departments of Economy and Population.

In 2002 he received the Pascual Madoz National Research Award in Social, Economic and Legal Sciences. She is also an Honoris Causa Doctor from the Universities of Valencia, the Autonomous University of Madrid and Granada.

She has been President of the Spanish Federation of Sociology (FES), member of the Executive Committee of the International Sociological Association, founder and director of the Institute of Women's Studies of the Autonomous University of Madrid and of the UNESCO Chair “Equality Policies”. He has carried out research stays at the Institute for Social Research (University of Michigan), College of Spain in Paris, European Institute of Florence, University of Washington (Seattle), University of Cambridge, Pontificia Universidade Católica (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She has collaborated with UNESCO, World Health Organization, ILO, Economic Commission for Latin America, United Nations Development Programme, UNFPA and UN Women.

He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Autonomous University of Madrid, Club of Rome (Spanish chapter), Commission of Experts of the Health Plan of the Valencian Community, Academy of Sciences of Malaga (corresponding), Fundación General CSIC (advisory commission on aging ), Advisory Committee of the Sociological Research Center and Advisory Committee of the Ibero-American Union of Municipalities.

The winner has been recognized for her extensive research and teaching career, and for her role in sociology in Spain and internationally. His intellectual production has left its mark on the sociology of work, family, health, and urban planning and has contributed to the development of studies on the relationship between men and women. In addition, she is the only Spanish sociologist who has achieved the prestigious Pascual Madoz National Research Award.

The jury, which has been constituted by the president of the CIS, the Professor of Sociology José Félix Tezanos Tortajada, will be made up of the Professor of Sociology at the Complutense University of Madrid, Inés Alberdi Alonso, the Professor of Sociology at the Rey Juan Carlos University , Alfonso de Esteban Alonso, the Professor of Political Science and Administration at the Complutense University, Esther del Campo García, the Professor of Political Science at the National University of Distance Education, Irene Delgado Sotillos, the Full Professor of Sociology at the Complutense University, María José Mateo Rivas, the Professor of Sociology at the National University of Distance Education, María Rosario H. Sánchez Morales, and the Professor of Sociology at the Carlos III University of Madrid, Constanza Tobío Soler.
