The CIS's summer course, "The Study of Public Opinion in Democratic Societies," was inaugurated today by the institution's president, José Félix Tezanos.

Tezanos focused his presentation on public opinion studies and sociological research.

The professor and president of the CIS (National Statistics Institute) has focused on the difference between a forecast and an estimate: "an estimate is based on statistical indicators." He also explained that in simple processes or contexts, it is "easier to make an estimate, even though today's electorates are declining, and the number of people who vote for the same party has dwindled to 20%."

Former president of the CIS and member of the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, Juan Díez Nicolás, also spoke this morning.

Díez asserted that "opinion polls are part of sociological research, but they are only part of social reality," adding that "this reality is not organized; rather, we organize it with classification systems." These systems are "totally subjective."

During the afternoon session, the panel "Information and the Study of Public Opinion as a Public Service" was held. RTVE President Concepción Cascajosa explained that the public broadcaster has focused in recent years on "providing accurate information and creating tools that allow for information verification."
