Original title: Generations of Exclusion: Mexican Americans, assimilation and race
Edward Telles and Vilma Ortiz, sociologists at the universities of Princeton and California, respectively, highlight a series of institutional barriers, such as the shortfalls of the education system and the persistence of discrimination, to explain why the integration of the youngest generations has come to a halt, and propose a series of measures to help give this process added impetus.
A fortuitous finding was the starting point for this innovative analysis, which shows how the economic and educational progress of immigrants of Mexican origin in the United States has come to a halt in the second generation.
In his presentation, Antonio Izquierdo, senior professor of Sociology at the University of A Coruña and Director of the Research Team on Sociology of International Migration, emphasises the need to redefine our views on integration and immigration policy in light of the disheartening results of this cross-generational research. “It is a key text in fields such as stratification, ethnicity and comparative policies on the integration of immigrants and their children in Europe and in the USA», asserts Izquierdo. The CIS will be at stand No. 17 at the 70th edition of the Madrid Book Fair (from 27 May to 12 June). Its book collection will be on sale with an exceptional 10% discount on the RRP at this event.
