CIS Publications General Information

The CIS carries out an intense publishing activity in order to disseminate the most important research projects conducted in the field of social sciences and to promote the use of data generated by the institution itself to contribute to a better understanding of Spanish society. This all takes place through a process of close collaboration with the Spanish and international teaching and research community. This activity has produced the following publications:

Revista Española de Investigaciones Sociológicas (REIS)

This is a quarterly publication that was first published in 1978, continuing the work of its predecessor, the Revista Española de la Opinión Pública, which was published by the Instituto de la Opinión Pública. Its historical background and the high quality of its articles have made it one of the benchmark journals in the fields of sociology and political science, both in Spain and in the rest of the Spanish-speaking world. It is also having an increasing impact within the international sphere, as demonstrated by its recent inclusion in the prestigious Social Sciences Citation Index and SCOPUS.

The articles and original research notes received for publication in the REIS go through a selection process which involves strict criteria in terms of quality and rigour. This process always involves the decision of at least two specialists who are external to the CIS, observing the anonymity of both the authors and assessors. This selection and assessment system is also used in all other CIS publications.

Monografías and Academia

The Monografías collection is composed, in general, of unpublished Spanish-language research projects dedicated monographically to an area or issue within the social sciences. The aim of this collection is to disseminate important current works of a high scientific quality and, for this reason, exacting selection criteria are used, with anonymous evaluation and evaluation in pairs. This collection includes the best doctoral theses presented within the field of social sciences (whenever these are presented in an academic format); works of international importance which, for different reasons, have not been translated into Spanish; and any other monographic research which meets the previously mentioned requirements of rigour and excellence.

The Academia collection is dedicated to compiling short works on a specific issue relating to social or political reality in a volume expressly devised for presenting different points of view on the same issue. It is produced with the participation of national and/or international experts. Each volume is edited by editors or compilers who guarantee its exhaustive character, thus offering the reader an overview of the issue under analysis.

Cuadernos Metodológicos

The Cuadernos Metodológicos are aimed both at researchers interested in methodological techniques and resources and students who need to learn about these. Their eminently practical focus and marked educational character make them extremely useful for research and teaching.

Opiniones y Actitudes and Elecciones

The collection Opiniones y Actitudes serves to circulate the empirical analysis of data, generally produced by the CIS, with special emphasis placed on the presentation and description of results rather than on theorising or establishing causal links between variables. It also aims to be easily read by a non-specialist readership and must not exceed 125 pages in size.

From June 2010 this collection has been started to release in a digital edition and may be consulted and downloaded free of charge from the CIS website. The text can be downloaded in three different formats, according to the needs of the reader: downloadable pdf, and for e-readers compatible with epub and pdf formats. Readers who wish to have a bound hard copy may purchase it on the printing on request platforms available in the catalogue of this collection.

The Elecciones collection brings together monographic works on all of the elections that have been held in Spain (general, regional, municipal and European) since 2004. These works, coordinated by an editorial team, present the contributions made by groups of researchers that help us develop an understanding of the main aspects of the electoral behaviour of Spaniards, using pre and post election surveys conducted by the CIS. Since 2008, there have been public invitations aimed at gathering proposals from different teams of academic researchers. Once the corresponding filters have been passed, the publishing contract is awarded to the proposal which the Editorial Board considers to be the best formulated and which is backed by the best specialists in the subject.

Clásicos Contemporáneos

The collection Clásicos Contemporáneos holds works of the most prestigious sociologists and political scientists contemporaries. Via the same one is expected to provide of quality back-up sources to the university teaching.

Debate Social

Debate Social is a collection which the CIS co-publishes with the Complutense University of Madrid. Its purpose is to reflect the most burning social and political issues being addressed in current public debate. Its aim is to foster the undertaking of rigorous research, both theoretical and empirical, which serves to focus public reflection on these issues.

Clásicos del Pensamiento Social

The collection Clásicos del Pensamiento Social brings together works which occupy an important place in the history of social sciences, but which have not been published in Spanish or are not available.

Books which, due to their special characteristics, do not fit into the abovementioned sections are published in Fuera de Colección, as in the case of tributes or some works co-published with other institutions.

Previous CIS publications

The purpose of the Estudios y Encuestas collection was to publish results of empirical studies conducted within the CIS, containing simple and accessible contextualised commentary on the presentation of marginals and cross references and highlighting the most relevant findings from a descriptive perspective.

In the Documentos CIS texts were published which, due to their content, did not fit into the other CIS collections, but which deserved to be disseminated because they were useful. This was the case of working documents or the transcriptions of speeches given at CIS-University Meetings. Publication of these ended in 2004.

The Boletín Datos de Opinión provided information on the most important data from surveys conducted by the CIS, presented clearly and concisely, and including a section of "temporary series", which were useful for both the academic community and the general public. Publication ended in 2005.
