The CIS conducts an average of forty research studies a year, most of which are quantitative (surveys), although some
are qualitative.
The surveys conducted by the CIS are entered into the Data Bank and made available to the public within a period of
three months after the information has been coded and recorded. This norm does not apply to studies
conducted under a co-operation agreement with any other public institution, which are published
one year after the results have been delivered to the entity that requested the study.
The following are the main types of quantitative studies conducted:
MONTHLY BAROMETERS
Since 1979, the CIS has been measuring public opinion each month in relation to the political and economic situation
of the country and the outlook for development. Furthermore, each Barometer covers subjects of social, economic and
political importance at that time.
MONOGRAPHIC STUDIES
Monographic studies are conducted on a wide range of topics: youth, immigration, lifestyles, public safety, political
culture, etc. Some of these studies are periodical, such as those on tax matters, institutional assessments, the
European unification process, etc.
STUDIES AT THE REGIONAL AND MUNICIPAL LEVELS
Apart from studies at the national level, the CIS also carries out others dedicated to analysing the social and
political situation within the different Autonomous Communities and the major Spanish municipalities.
ELECTION SURVEYS
During each and every election held in Spain, the CIS carries out pre- and post-election polls to study the
characteristics and trends of citizens’ voting habits.
STUDIES IN COLLABORATION WITH PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS (Co-operation agreements)
In response to requests for collaboration from other Government entities, through the obligatory co-operation agreement, the CIS carries out specific studies designed to satisfy the research requirements of the different public institutions.
INTERNATIONAL STUDIES
The CIS participates regularly in international research projects. In recent years, among others, it has participated
in the Fertility and Family Survey (FFS), co-ordinated by the United Nations, the EUROSTAT (European Union Statistics
Office) project on the Causes of International Immigration, the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) survey on
the Role of Government, as well as in various Latinobarometers.
Apart from the quantitative studies, the CIS also deals with a series of qualitative surveys, which
are usually entrusted to specialists in this type of methodology.
